ATM/Debit Card NSF Fee

The Credit Union is enforcing a $20 Insufficient Funds Fee for each transaction that puts your account into a negative.  Our ATM/debit cards are set up to decline any transaction that will result in your account going into a negative balance, but there are rare times this happens.  If we suspect account abuse, we will shut down your card.  It is your responsibility to maintain an accurate balance in your account to avoid these fees.  Here are some helpful hints to avoid this fee:

bullet

Places like gas stations may force post your transaction.  If you have $10 in your account, and you have a $12 purchase at a gas station, your account will go negative and you will be charged a $20 NSF fee.

bullet

Use your savings account to cover NSF transactions:  Since everyone who is a member of the credit union has a savings account, you can use the available money in your savings to cover the transaction.  Be sure you have a signed transfer authorization form in order to have money automatically transferred into your checking from your savings account.

bullet

Do not use your ATM/debit card to reserve hotel rooms, rent vehicles, or purchase airline tickets.  These places will put an additional hold on the funds in your account.  A hold means that the money is not taken out of your account, but set off to the side so it is not available for you to use.  These holds are used as "deposits" to cover any potential damages, cancellation fees, etc, and show on your account for a few days then disappear.  For example, you have $500 in your checking account and use your card to rent a hotel room that costs $100.  The hotel puts a hold of $150 on your account on top of the cost for the room.  This means you only have $250 available for you to use until the hold is released.

Beware of Scams

Protect your Account

We've started a new Scams page to help inform members of different scams that we are aware of.

It is important for you to keep a close eye on your account and credit card statements.  Most financial institutions and credit card companies have online account access which will allow you to look at your account history at any time.

It is also a good idea to keep an eye on your credit report.  Everyone is allowed one free annual credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com.  You may also go to one of the three major credit reporting agencies.  They are:

Why Join a Credit Union?

Credit Union's are non-profit financial co-operatives owned and operated by its members.   When you open an account at a credit union, you become a member and  an owner.  This means, the profit we make gets returned to you by the way of better interest rates on loans and higher dividends on savings.  Each account is insured up to $100,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF).  This makes federal credit unions one of the safest places to deposit your money.  When you deposit money into a credit union, funds are immediately deposited into your account, unlike some other financial institutions where you would have to wait until the next business day before it officially hits your account.  Combine all this with many of the other great services and products and you can't go wrong with joining a Credit Union.  However, there are certain qualifications you must meet in order to become a member.   To learn how to become a member of the Chadron Federal Credit Union, just click on About Us
